Cell renewal of this part slows down with age and at the same time the formation of lipids on the surface of the skin decreases, which increases the susceptibility to dehydration and thickening. The skin heals less and natural protection against infections is reduced. Dermis otherwise also joints gives the skin strength. With age and the influence of the external environment, there is a loss of collagen and elastin, which leads to disruption of the skin's structure. As a result, this weakening results in a loss of elasticity and strength. With advancing age, blood circulation also decreases, which significantly reduces the nutrition of the epidermis. In the layers of the subcutaneous tissue, the size of fat cells changes most markedly with age. Decreasing fat cell synthesis is the cause of sagging facial contours, deep nasal grooves and withered skin on the jaws.

Stress and the environment speed up this process. In the facial area, fat cells do not play the role of energy storage, they are empty, and thus significantly weaken the firmness and elasticity of the skin (sagging facial features).
